What Writing Skills Should a Resume Writer Possess?

Know right up front, you're not hiring someone to write your next novel. The writing criteria for a resume is different than that with other written "vehicles." Your resume writer should be an expert at writing resumes and cover letters, yet may not have anal knowledge of grammar and punctuation. That's okay! In fact, not all grammatical standards apply to resumes ... that's sometimes difficult for jobseekers to understand. A resume and cover letter are designed to market and sell your skills to potential employers. Although important, punctuation and proper grammar sometimes need to take a backseat to other, more important, elements. A resume and cover letter are more pieces of marketing material that are designed to sell a product: you.

Why isn't grammar always important, you ask? The answer is simple. Writing quality need only be par for those reading it. Don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying you should submit a substandard resume because those reading it don't know any better. I am saying, however, that you shouldn't stress over every bit of punctuation and grammar because you're worried it will cost you a job. Those reading your resume may not notice the missing comma or misplaced modifier either.

Shoot for excellence, yet fall short of perfection. That might sound crazy to you, but worry and stress has been linked to illness. Never should your resume be the cause of anything negative; stress or otherwise. There are far more important things in life to worry about, in my opinion.
