What's the difference between
a professionally written resume and the one you're using
now? Not much if you hire a
resume writer who possesses just a hair more experience
than you.
Who will be writing your resume? Before hiring any writer,
know that person's skill level. You'd be amazed at how
many resume writing services employ subcontracted writers.
Although several high-end writers handle subbed projects,
I've seen many more non-skilled writers on the subbing
end of things. True, all writers need to start somewhere.
My concern is more directed towards you getting a
quality document. The writing firm might look shiny and polished
on the front end, and their sales rep says all the right
things, but what quality will you receive on the back
end?
In my opinion, you'll be subjected to low-quality
writing when you're faced with price restrictions.
Quality writing takes time, and quality time takes
money. I jokingly say within my pricing page
that "When prospects come to me with a price limit,
it's much like asking for custom-made furniture at
Wal-Mart's off-the-shelf prices. The two don't
mesh."
An investment that may be out of your league,
but when you factor our clients experience added ease
when job searching. Many go on to accept prime new positions.
And if positioned properly, our clients negotiate salaries
that far outweigh the investment they expended to begin
with.
Key questions to ask any potential resume writer:
1. How long have they been writing resumes?
2. Do they have a specialty?
3. Also, don't be afraid to ask about their methodology
when it comes your project. Do they suggest a chronological,
or some other format? And, why?
4. How do you write resumes differently to cater to
websites, or the online community?*
5. What credentials do you possess? Here's a list of
career
acronyms for career coaches, resume writers, interview
trainers, personal branding experts, and career counselors
to use as a reference. Plus, here are my added thoughts
on a
resume writer's credentials.
* ... a trick question, actually.
You need to gauge the experience your potential writer
possesses; so, if your writer knows nothing about resume
management systems and how those systems affect the
way jobseekers conduct their job-search, then, this
person you're interviewing isn't the writer for you.
