If you read my comments on "Should I Hire a Resume Writer?" you'll know that I'm not an advocate for every jobseeker to seek professional resume help with their resumes. The truth is, not every jobseeker can benefit from using a writer. There are some out there that have done wonderful jobs with their resumes; after all, people over centuries have landed jobs without professional interference.
So, I have a couple tips for determining whether you need a professional resume writer, or if you're fine going it alone. Here we go ...
1. Your current resume is generating a pretty good return. What's a good return, you ask? Probably 10% -- that number may be too high for some, while conservative for others. Returns will depend upon career field, industry demands, and so on. I like 10% because that equals one interview out of every 10 resumes sent. Statistically, 2-3 first interviews should generate 1-2 second interviews, and preferably, a job offer. 2. Competition for your career field is so minute that you're likely to be hired on your credentials and availability (your "word of mouth" factor, let's say) alone -- the resume is more of a technicality than a necessity. I've worked with several over the years who were insistent upon working with me, when in actually, they really didn't need me. If you find yourself in a situation where only one or two apply for jobs you're eyeing, it's likely you don't need the help of a resume writer. |
