Understand that if
your resume will not be
used for job-search purposes, then you
may not need a resume per se. What you need might
somewhat look and "smell" like a resume, but overall,
you'll have much more control over creativity, layout
and content, with a similar document. This is
something to consider going forward.
A main consideration to developing a business resume
(or whatever you'll call the finished works) is
who the audience of your document will be. If you're
needing something seen by prospects, then consider
the integration of praising client comments, lists
of prominent clients, and other important (and impressive!!)
business-specific details that prospects wish to
know about you and your business operation.
Keep in mind, too, the document could be
slightly spun for distribution to existing clients,
as well, for the purpose of up-selling and cross-selling.
Let's say, however, that you wish to
utilize a business resume
for the sake of searching for employment.
Maybe you plan on selling or closing your business.
Then, yes, a traditional business resume will be
perfect for your needs.
Traditional resume categories will be perfect as
well, yet you might broaden your business resume
a bit further by adding Board of Director (BOD)
positions, affiliations, and committee involvement.
Keep
in mind, however, that some roles you're
performing now, whether as part of your daily job
or as part of promoting your business, may not be
relevant to those considering you for employment.
Also keep in mind that there's a bit of stigma
that goes along with business owners. Hiring managers
are possibly thinking: Why is he leaving his business?
Why is he looking to take a step back in his career?
Why would he want to work for our company?
Business resumes can be ...
... used within bid packages when securing a
contract
... integrated into your online web portfolio
... submitted as part of a proposal to support a
venture capital request
... provided to prospects for solicitation purposes;
clients to expand their knowledge of your wares
These are all viable
questions, and in all likely-hood, ones you'll need
to answer at some point.
Don't
miss added opportunities with a business resume.
A business resume can be used
within your personal
branding campaign as well. Here's a good time to
mention ... if you're a business owner and currently
don't have a personal branding campaign in effect,
you're missing out on one of the hugest opportunities
to draw business. Attracting business using branding
and marketing techniques is just smart business.
Your cost of acquiring the sale is substantially
less, therefore, adding significant bottom-line
profits. Plus, these techniques oftentimes generate
more referral clients. Think about it. When's the
last time you were given a recommendation by someone
who had just noticed an ad in the yellow pages?
It never happens.
People refer people they know, those they have
heard of, or those they have a perception about.
So, just to recap. What will the resume be
used for? If clients and prospects, great. If you're
planning to utilize it for another platform, ensure
to morph the resume to its intended audience. The
more focused the resume (or whatever it is you create),
the better the return.
Business
Resume Objective
When writing the objective for your business resume,
again, consider the audience. The objective serves
as your quick commercial, letting readers see at
a glance your target position and how your skill
set is relevant to them. Objectives range in size,
typically 5 sentences or more. You want something
that's "meaty" enough to satisfy most everyone reading
it.
Take the following objective for a website developer.
In this example, this client wished to secure clients
using his business, yet he also wanted to be able
to shift the resume should be require it for an
employer down the road. Note how this client wished
his company logo above the objective. Nice touch!
